Kevin at 10 months old

I remember when Andrea was about 9 months old, I did a little inventory of her likes and dislikes, her interests, her habits, etc. Now, it's Kevin's turn!

Eating

Kevin eats well, but he has clear likes and dislikes. He does NOT like lumpy foods. Everything has to be totally pureed. His favourite fruit is pears; his favourite vegetable is butternut squash, with sweet potatoes as a close second. Recently, he has started to gnaw on cucumber circles and mini carrots (they feel good on his teeth), and today he got very excited about his baby rice crackers (Mum Mums) and chewed four of them to mushy bits! He tolerates pureed meats, but only if they're mixed into his veggies. He TRIES to feed himself, but his new game is throwing everything off his tray, so Mommy's usually in charge.

Playing

Kevin has a little rotation he follows throughout the day: play with Mommy, play on the floor, play in the Exersaucer, rest in the swing; play with mom, play on the floor, etc. He doesn't seem to have a favorite toy yet. Anything he can chew on is good; he also likes toys with lights and music. He still loves watching Andrea, too. He also tries to grab at her, or pat her, a lot--which, unfortunately, she still dislikes.

His favourite games are anything we play one-on-one with him. He loves to do "minouche" (an old Gagnon family game with French words and face patting), lean over upside-down in our arms and dangle (!), and be surprised by us popping up at him or out at him from somewhere.

He doesn't seem too interested in TV yet, with one notable exception: he loves the show Go, Diego, Go! He laughs and squeals and tries to talk to Diego, when he sees him on the screen.

Oh, and the latest, greatest plaything at our house right now is balloons. We've been to a few parties lately, and people often give us balloons to bring home for the kids. Andrea and Kevin love them! (Yes, I watch to make sure no one swallows anything.) Here's a picture, and video, of Kevin enjoying a balloon from Gram G.'s retirement party:

Moving Around

It looks like Kevin is going to take after his sister: still no crawling or pulling himself up. He can put weight on his legs when you encourage him. His main mode of movement is rolling! He rolls himself over and over, all around the room, to get whatever he wants. It's not an efficient way to travel, but it gets him there eventually. I am starting to put up the stairway gate, though, because he can roll himself over there now!

Talking

Kevin's not much of a talker, especially when he's in a new situation, or with people he doesn't see too often. Even when he does try to talk, he's usually pretty quiet--except for the occasional vocal exercises in which he screeches at different pitches! Right now he says "Dada" most, and sometimes "Mama." We also hear a lot of "Baba."

Social Development

I think Kevin's a bit of a shy guy. Like I said, he doesn't have too much to say around people outside our immediate family. It also takes him awhile to warm up to people, especially at big family gatherings or parties. He can get a bit overwhelmed if too many people converge on him at once, or if someone he doesn't know too well or hasn't seen in awhile catches him off guard.

I would say that he's definitely Mama's Boy. Andrea is clearly Daddy's Girl, so that works out well. He still adores Daddy, though--I have seen him cry when Rod leaves the house, or if Rod comes home and doesn't come and hold him right away!

Overall, he's a peaceful, cheerful little guy. He has the best belly laughs, and the funniest toothy grin ever.

His newest achievement in social development is waving hello and goodbye. He started that about 2 weeks ago. We have to prompt him, and wave to encourage him, but he usually does it. Sometimes he still waves both hands when he gets really excited.

Here's a video of Kevin from a week or so ago, when he started to wave. There's also a bit of Dada tickling him, and making him laugh.

Big Boy

I haven't weighed or measured him recently, but he is wearing size 12-18 months and 18 months clothing now. He wears toddler size 4 shoes (!). He still has the baby mannerisms, but sometimes when I look at him, I can picture him getting up and walking and talking any day now. He is really tall and solid for his age, just like Andrea was (and is).

I had to laugh the other night when I went in to check on him, and he was asleep with his leg hanging out of the crib. The angle of the picture I took that night emphasizes how much he's grown!

Overall, he's doing really well. Of course, I'm concerned that he's not crawling or trying to stand yet, but since we've been through it with Andrea, I'm not panicking. There's just too much about him to enjoy right now. I can't tell you how many times each day I find myself saying, "You're so funny, buddy!" or "You are TOO cute!"

Victoria Day Weekend

Despite a gloomy forecast, our Victoria day weekend actually tuned out to be quite nice. There was enough sunshine for us to get out and about a bit each day. In fact, Daddy and Mommy both got mild sunburns!

Friday Night

We went out for dinner, and the kids were amazingly well behaved (unusual, but great). Andrea charmed the server with her pleases and thank yous, while Kevin provided the entertainment for people around us by grinning at people, and gnawing on everything in sight. His favourite items were the edge of the table (EW!) and the dessert menu (EW again--but at least you can see how that might be tempting). He is definitely teething again, but I don't see any new teeth yet.

Saturday

On Saturday morning, Aunt Stephanie called and we decided to get Isabelle and Andrea together for a playdate. They're really getting to a stage where it's fun to get them together, because they are interacting more now. They like to dance together, and run together, and play with toys (although we're still working on the sharing!).

It was so nice out that we decided to take Kevin and the girls to the carnival at the nearby mall. We took Andrea last year, and she loved the kiddie rides! In fact, Daddy had taken her over for a few rides on Friday night, too. This time, we all went together.

***

Andrea got to ride on the front of the miniature train, and ring the bell!

***

"Yay! It's my first visit to the carnival!"

Riding In Style
***
Kevin got to go on his first amusement ride, and he liked it!
***
Isabelle was a brave girl--she was afraid of the rides, but tried out the Strawberry. It was okay.
***
Daddy helped Andrea go through the bouncy crawler. Who had the most fun?
***
This is definitely the biggest slide Andrea's ever been on! She liked it.
***
Isabelle and Andrea played a boat and ducky fishing game. They did a great job--and both won a pink and white striped fish!
***
I had to add in the picture of Kevin feeding himself when we got home. Mmm . . . spaghetti sauce and peas! He spits out the noodles, or scrapes them out of his mouth; thus, the mess!
Sunday
On Sunday afternoon, we headed across the border to visit Aunt Donna and Uncle Greg. They had an awesome BBQ chicken and corn-on-the-cob meal for us. Mmmm . . .
But of course, what we really enjoyed was spending time together!
Andrea just adores her older cousins. Caitlin is 15, and Tyler is 10, so she looks up to them; and they give her lots of attention in return.
Aunt Donna bought Andrea a Dora pump-up sleepover bed, which Andrea immediately fell in love with. (In fact, it now appears to be permanently installed in the middle of our living room!) She wanted everyone to lay down and play "Good night/Go to sleep" and "Good morning/Wake up!" with her!
Caitlin and Andrea cuddling on the Dora bed
Caitlin, Tyler, and Andrea playing "Go to sleep!"
***

Yes, that is Aunt Donna hiding under the blanket and ball cap! Kevin enjoyed snuggling up with her to have his bottle. He DID NOT like the flash on Mommy's camera! ("Mom, I'm trying to RELAX here!)

***

Tyler was so excited, because he got to put on a little fireworks show for us. It worked out well that he was stocked up for the U.S. celebration next weekend!
***

Andrea truly appreciated Tyler's efforts. She insisted that everyone clap and say, "Yay!" after each firework. Tyler even gave her some sparklers, and Daddy helped her enjoy them safely.

Monday

It has been a busy day for us, but I just wanted to share an anecdote from bath time tonight:

Andrea has all kinds of pretend adventures in the bathtub, and gets very excited and chatters away to her toys as she bathes. Tonight, I heard her yell, "Help! Help! Get it off! It's crawling me!" It was time to get her out, anyway. But when I went in, she was curled up in one corner of the bathtub, and kept saying, "Get it off!" She had a toy bag draped on her arm, so I figured that's what she meant. But when I removed the toy bag, there was a SPIDER floating under it! Ewww! Andrea wanted to be removed from the tub immediately. When I saw how nervous she was, I tried to make a joke out of it: "Oh, the spider wanted to share your bubble bath, and visit such a nice little girl!" and "the Itsy Bitsy Spider came down your water spout!" (Meanwhile, I am inwardly shuddering and grimacing!) Andrea told me that the spider came in her bath, and "crawled my arm!"

But she's also telling Daddy and I that the spider was purple. ;-)

The Truth about Motherhood

This is one of the best poems I have ever read about motherhood. The author is unknown, but she was definitely a MOM.

Before I was a Mom
I made and ate hot meals.
I had unstained clothing.
I had quiet conversations on the phone.

Before I was a Mom
I slept as late as I wanted
And never worried about how late
I got into bed.
I brushed my hair and my teeth everyday.

Before I was a Mom,
I cleaned my house each day.
I never tripped over toys
or forgot words to lullabies.

Before I was a Mom,
I didn't worry whether or not my
plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mom,
I had never been pooped on,
Spit up on,
Chewed on,
Peed on,
Or pinched by tiny fingers.

Before I was a Mom,
I had complete control of myself;
My thoughts,
My body,
And my mind.
I slept all night.

Before I was a Mom,
I never held down a screaming child
so that doctors could do tests or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom,
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't
want to put it down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces
when I couldn't stop the hurt.
I never knew something so small could affect my
life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.

Before I was a Mom,
I didn't know the feeling of having my
heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel
to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond between a
Mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small
could make me feel so important.

Before I was a Mom,
I had never gotten up in the middle of
the night every ten minutes to make
sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth,
The joy,
The love,
The heartache,
The wonderment,
Or the satisfaction of being a Mom.

I didn't know I was capable of feeling so
much before I was a Mom.

I couldn't have said it better. :))

The Photographer's Subject

Grandma G. took this photo of Kevin the other day, when she had him over for a visit. She enhanced it with the sepia tone, and voila! C'est magnifique, n'est-ce pas? :))

Definitely Daddy's Girl!

Further evidence that Andrea is clearly Daddy's Girl:

About a week ago, Daddy showed Andrea the set of 5 card magnets he has on our fridge (Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten of Diamonds). He taught her what the Ace and face cards were, and to recognize number ten. Then I taught her about the suit (diamonds). Within 2 days, she could name them all, even out of order!

So, Daddy decided to take it to the next step. About two days ago, he brought a deck of cards upstairs. He began to go through naming random cards with her. It helped a lot that she was already able to recognize and name numbers one through nine. And the fridge magnets had helped her learn the Ace and face cards. So, he basically just had to teach her to recognize hearts, spades, and clubs. Hearts were easy too---she already knows that shape.

Well, within two days, she has learned to recognize and name any card in the deck, including the Jokers! Every once in a while, she still hesitates on the King, confusing it with the Jack (probably because they're both male figures on the cards).

Daddy says his next goal is to teach her to recognize the full house, trips, straight, flush, etc.

Look out, World Series of Poker 2026!

Here's a video I got of Andrea naming the cards.

A Simple, but Special, Moment

Andrea asked to have Kevin sit next to her on the rocking chair, so they could rock together. Then she told Daddy she wanted Mommy to take their picture!

How cute is that?!
Mommy's loving it. These sibling bonding moments are rare and precious!
